Khaatim sworn in as president of the West End Rotary!

Several neighbors and friends came out to help Khaatim celebrate his induction as president of the West End Rotary Club of Atlanta. He becomes the youngest to serve in that position in the Club's over 50-year history.

Khaatim reflected on his mother's sacrafice for him and his brothers as a somber reminder for the call to action we have to service in this time of need for many families.

Milton Little, president of the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, was the keynote speaker and reminded everyone of the history that Rotary and United Way share in tackling social issues faced by the region.

The West End Rotary Club also welcomed three new members --- Joel Alvarado, Policy Director for the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and chairperson for NPU-K; C.J. Stewart, former Chicago Cubs baseball player and founder of the Ambassador's League; and former speech writer for State Superintendent Kathy Cox and Building Excellent Schools Fellow Kimberlin Butler, who now works in public relations for the Future Foundation.

Among those in attendance included Khaatim's mentor Dr. Charles Meadows, Director for the Center of Teacher Preperation at Morehouse College; Shelley Serdahely, Executive Director for Men Stopping Violence; Alexis Scott, Editor and Publisher of the Atlanta Daily World; Millie Irrizary, CEO Latin American Association; Brenda Muhammad, Atlanta Board of Education; State Rep. Rashad Taylor; and City Councilmember Natalyn Archibong.

Rotary is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. The West End Rotary Club has had a longstanding history in serving the community, including its work with the Salvation Army, The Harland Boys & Girls Club and the Sullivan Center. In recent years, the West End Rotary Club has funded clean drinking water projects in Bolivia, medical missions to Haiti and Liberia and collected crutches and other walking aids for those in need in Africa. In our own backyard, the Club has recently embarked on a partnership with the Ferst Foundation to provide children living in West End a book each month until they turn 5-years old to promote literacy and provided a grant to an urban farming project at Brown Middle School.

The West End Rotary Club meets each Friday at 12PM at Paschals Restaraunt. For more information, please contact Khaatim at (404) 752-7523.
