Khaatim's Work Plan for 2010-2011

Priority #1: Reduce truancy and increase high school graduation rate, particularly for African-American males

 

  • Implement truancy hotline within the Atlanta Public Schools and distribute community information around targeted schools within the community

 

  • Host a community summit on high school graduation and preventing dropouts

 

    • Highlight role of graduation coaches within APS
    • Celebrate the success of Project GRAD

 

Priority #2: Involve parents, community leaders, educators and all stakeholders in improving our schools

 

  • Host quarterly parent education and training sessions and prepare annual report
    • Partner with neighborhoods and neighborhood organizations throughout the District

 

  • Convene NPU Education Leadership Council
    • Work collaboratively with NPUs to develop an action agenda focused on children, families and schools that addresses issues such as, improving neighborhood schools, attracting new families in the community
    • Update each CDP to include focus on schools

 

  • Host PTA and Neighborhood partnerships meeting
    • Sponsor grants for PTAs to increase parent involvement
    • Raise funds from area developers, foundations, etc

 

  • Raise $ for Pearl Dove Scholarship and Community Programs

 

Priority #3: Improve access to affordable, high-quality early childhood programs

 

  • Host bi-annual meeting with childcare providers to share resources and information

 

  • Increase HeadStart and Pre-K offerings in neighborhoods with high numbers of three and four year olds

 

Priority #4: Facilitate greater working relationship with the City and County to provide youth with after-school and summer enrichment opportunities

 

  • Work collaboratively with Mayor and City Council to host annual meeting with Superintendent and School Board

 

  • Create Summer Yellow Pages for students

 

  • Launch health initiative focused on childhood obesity
